Dunk Low Premium Medium Curry
Dunk Low Premium Medium Curry
Culture Note™
Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 29 March 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has the Sail/Medium Curry/Fossil colourway. Medium Curry is a warm golden brown, a spice tone rather than a school colour, and on a Dunk Low Premium it changes what the shoe is for. Premium in this line means the materials get the attention that colour usually receives, so the panel split reads as texture and depth instead of contrast. The Dunk came out of 1980s basketball with a two panel upper built for team colours, then found a second life on skateboards and a third in fashion. A curry toned premium build belongs firmly to the third life. It is a shoe designed to sit next to brown leather goods rather than next to a jersey.
Utility
Two ways in. Warm and layered: brown or khaki trousers, a cream knit and a tan jacket, the shoe finishing a single earth palette. Contrast: charcoal or black denim with a black tee and an ecru overshirt, where the curry tone becomes the only warmth in the outfit and reads as deliberate. This palette belongs to autumn and dry winter light, and it works with brown leather bags and belts in a way most sneakers cannot. Dunks fit true. Keep napped materials away from rain, spray a protector before the first wear, brush after each wear, and dry naturally rather than near heat if you are caught out.
Influence
Nike has bought leather craft as well as built it. Between 1988 and 2013 it owned Cole Haan, a dress shoe house, and its wider record includes Bauer Hockey from 1994 to 2008, Umbro from 2007 to 2012 and Starter from 2004 to 2007. Almost all of it was sold on, leaving Converse, bought in 2003 for 309 million dollars, as the sole remaining major subsidiary. What Nike kept from that period was not the companies but the knowledge, and premium material programmes are where it shows. A curry brown Dunk in a proper suede or leather is Nike behaving less like a sportswear brand and more like a shoemaker.
Construction
On a premium Dunk the build is the pitch. The silhouette is unchanged, low collar, padded ankle, flat rubber cup sole, so the difference lives in the hand feel of the panels and the way the tone shifts across a suede nap or a tumbled leather surface. Medium Curry is a colour that rewards texture, since a warm mid brown looks flat in a synthetic and rich in a napped material. Warm browns also hide street dust well and mark badly with water, which is the trade you are making. Protect before first wear, brush the nap in one direction to keep the colour even, and clean with foam rather than soaking so the tone does not dry patchy.
