Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 February 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Pale Ivory/Medium Soft Pink/Night Maroon. The Dunk was made for hardwood and ended up owning the pavement, which is the most Nike story there is. By 1980 the company held roughly half of the US athletic shoe market and had gone public, and the decade that followed produced the pieces that made it permanent: the 1984 Michael Jordan signing, the 1987 Air Max, and the Just Do It line that Dan Wieden wrote in 1988. The Dunk came out of that same confidence, a simple two panel basketball shoe designed to be recoloured endlessly. This Premium version takes Night Red, a deep and slightly wine tinted red that sits closer to leather goods than to team kit.
Two builds. Tonal: black or charcoal straight leg trousers with a cream knit, letting Night Red be the only colour in the outfit and stopping it from reading as sportswear. Casual: raw denim, a plain hoodie, white socks with a short break so the red panel is visible when you sit. The Dunk fits long and narrow, so most people take half a size down from their trainer size. It is a flat, unforgiving sole, so it is a great walking shoe for a night out and a poor one for a full day on concrete. Keep it out of the rain: premium leather and salt water do not recover.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Dunk is one of the clearest examples of a shoe finding an audience its designers never targeted. Basketball opened the door, aided by Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising for Air Jordan, and the sneaker then travelled through skateboarding, campus dress, and every wave of 1990s and 2000s casualwear. Colourways became the language: a shade like Night Red communicates something specific to people who read sneakers fluently and nothing at all to people who do not. That double life is the entire appeal.
The Dunk's build is deliberately old fashioned: a low cut leather upper, a padded collar, a broad Swoosh panel doing the work of holding the midfoot, and a flat court sole underneath. It has no visible cushioning technology and asks for none, which is why it has aged better than shoes with more to prove. The Premium designation on this pair signals upper material treated as the point rather than the background. Red uppers fade in strong sun, so store it out of direct light. Clean with a barely damp cloth rather than soaking, condition the panels if they dry out, and use a shoe tree or paper to slow the creases across the toe.
