Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 January 2007 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in dark mocha/tweed. Dunk Low Pro SB is the shoe that made skateboarding a serious business for Nike, and Mocha is one of the colourways people cite when they argue about which of those early pairs mattered. The Pro SB build was not a colour swap of a basketball shoe, it was a re engineering of the Dunk for a different kind of impact, and it arrived from a company that had spent the previous two decades making cushioning its public argument, from the waffle sole Bowerman poured in his wife's kitchen to the Air unit put on display in 1987. Mocha keeps it brown and quiet, which in a category built on loud graphics was itself a position.
First: the period correct look, loose denim or wide chinos stacked over the toe, a plain tee and a brown or tan cap picking up the mocha. Second: modern and tonal, cream trousers with a camel knit, where a brown suede low top reads more like a wardrobe shoe than a skate one. Size true to your Dunk size. Brush suede dry with a suede brush, never soak it, use a protector spray before first wear, and keep it away from monsoon puddles which stain nubuck permanently.
Nike SB's relationship with skate culture started uneasily, and the clearest reminder is the imprint's 2005 use of Minor Threat's 1981 album artwork on a tour flyer, which drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike on 27 June 2005 before the matter settled out of court. That episode is why SB releases are still read closely for authenticity. The early Pro SB Dunk colourways are the ones that survived that scrutiny, and Mocha sits among them: a shoe collected by people who watched the category form, rather than one designed for the resale market that came later.
The SB version of the Dunk differs from the standard shoe in the places that matter to a skater: a fatter, more padded tongue, a cushioned collar and a build tuned to survive repeated board contact, over the same rubber cupsole lineage Nike has used since its waffle tread days. Mocha runs warm browns across the panels, so the shoe hides scuffing better than a white pair, though suede and nubuck finishes in this family mark with water and need brushing rather than washing. The toe and the lace loops take the damage first if you actually skate in it. Break in is quick, and the padding compresses noticeably in the first weeks.
