Released on 10 April 2021 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Celadon/Coast/Concord. ACG is Nike's All Conditions Gear label, built for outdoors rather than for courts, and this SB Dunk Low borrows its palette in a soft celadon, the pale grey green of glazed ceramic. Two Nike sub brands meeting on one shoe is the sort of internal borrowing the company does well, and the Dunk is the natural meeting point because it was drawn in the mid 1980s specifically to be recoloured. Nike SB then rebuilt it for skateboarding by adding padding and Zoom Air cushioning. What you end up with is an outdoor line's colour language on a skate shoe built from a basketball model, which is a genuinely odd lineage and part of the appeal.
Pale grey green is a quieter colour than it looks and it flatters earth tones. Wear it with olive cargo trousers, a cream tee and a black jacket for the outdoor leaning fit the colour is asking for, or with grey sweatpants and a white hoodie where the celadon is the only tint in a neutral outfit. Avoid strong blues, which make the green look uncertain. It is a real skate shoe, so it handles long days standing and actual board time, and it fits true to size. Pale suede is the maintenance job: spray a protector before first wear, brush dry only, never soak it, and keep it clear of wet dark denim.
Nike SB earned its place in skateboarding through product and partnership rather than the advertising machine that carried the rest of the company, and it has been publicly held to account when it borrowed without asking, most notably over its 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art, which drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology. Borrowing from ACG, an internal Nike line, avoids all of that and gives the SB Dunk an outdoor visual reference instead of a subcultural one. Around it, the brand's mainstream weight came from basketball, from the 1984 Michael Jordan signing to Air Force 1s and Air Max models becoming staples of hip hop and youth dress.
This is the SB Pro build, so the shoe carries a thick padded tongue, a cushioned collar and a Zoom Air insole under the foot, all of it there to absorb landings, with Nike's pressurised Air cushioning hidden inside rather than shown through a midsole window. The upper works suede and leather panels, and suede is the skate material of choice because it abrades into a patina instead of splitting at the ollie area. Celadon on suede has a chalky depth that flat leather cannot reproduce. Underneath, the flat rubber outsole gives grip and board feel on a low midsole. Fits true to size with a snug padded collar that relaxes within a week of real wear.
