    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 June 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Lucky Green/Metallic Gold. St. Patrick's Day is one of the few dates Nike SB has treated as a recurring appointment, and the Dunk Low is the shape it keeps returning to. The logic is simple: the Dunk is a two-tone shoe, a holiday is a two-tone idea, and a green build reads instantly from across a park. What makes an SB version different from a general release Dunk is intent. The line exists because skaters adopted the Dunk before Nike had a skate programme, and everything SB does is downstream of that borrowing. A seasonal colourway on a skate build is the line at its most relaxed, less concerned with subcultural credentials than with giving shops something loud to put in the window in March.
Two ways to wear green without looking costumed. First, wash it out: faded blue denim, a grey hoodie, a shoe that reads as a single accent at the floor. Second, commit: black trousers, black tee, and the green treated as the whole point, which is how most people actually wear a holiday pair. Skate builds run a touch snug because of the padding, so if you are between sizes go up rather than down. Fine for skating, fine for daily wear, poor in heavy rain. Air the padded collar out fully after use, spot-clean by hand, keep green material away from harsh cleaners because they pull colour unevenly, and store away from direct light so the tone does not fade.
Nike SB's whole existence is a negotiation with a subculture that did not ask for it, and the line has occasionally overstepped. Its 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, an apology from Nike on 27 June that year and an out-of-court settlement, and that episode still shapes how SB handles borrowed imagery. Holiday colourways are the safe ground: no artwork lifted, no scene claimed, just a colour everyone already associates with a date. The result is a release that skate shops can sell to skaters and to people who have never stood on a board, which is precisely the tension SB has lived inside since it began.
Skate construction changes the shoe from the inside. The tongue is thicker so laces do not press into the foot on a hard landing, the collar carries more padding around the ankle, and the panels most exposed to griptape are the ones built to take abrasion. Underfoot the priority is grip and board feel, which is the same problem Bill Bowerman was solving when he poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron looking for tread that gripped without adding weight. A green build like this shows scuffing faster than a black one, so the material choice is doing real work. In wear, the extra padding means a plusher first impression than a standard Dunk and a slightly bulkier profile through the ankle.
