Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 August 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Monarch/Flax/Dark Russet/Light Orewood Brown. The SE designation on a Dunk means a special edition upper rather than a straight colour swap, and it is where Nike experiments without disturbing the silhouette. Monarch is a warm brown and tan palette named for the butterfly, which puts it squarely in the earth-tone register the Dunk spent decades avoiding while it was busy being a team shoe. That shift matters. A silhouette built to broadcast school colours now spends most of its life in shades borrowed from nature, worn by people who have no interest in declaring anything. The Dunk survived by changing what it was for, not by changing what it was.
Brown and tan is the most wearable palette in this range and the easiest to overdo. Recipe one: cream wide-leg corduroy trousers, a brown knit polo and a tan suede jacket, an all-earth stack where the shoe blends into the whole rather than terminating it. Recipe two: black straight-leg denim, a white tee and a black jacket, using hard neutrals to make the warm tones stand out sharply. Dunks run long and narrow, so half a size down suits most feet. Brush napped panels dry with a suede brush before any liquid touches them, protect before first wear, and never soak, since water marks on tan set as visible rings.
Nike's court shoes became mainstream dress in the 1980s through urban and hip hop fashion, then returned in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes, and each of those returns arrived with a different colour logic. The current one is earth tones, the point at which a sneaker stops referencing sport and starts behaving like clothing. Nike's own material story has moved in the same direction, with Nike Grind recycling scrap and worn product back into new goods and surfaces, and a 2021 partnership with Newlight Technologies on AirCarbon bioplastic. Brown and tan happen to be the colours those conversations naturally produce.
An SE build typically mixes materials across the panels, so expect texture contrast between smooth and napped surfaces in the brown and tan blocking rather than a single uniform leather. That mixing is what makes an earth-tone Dunk work, since two similar warm tones need a difference in surface to stay separate. Underneath, the geometry is unchanged: a flat rubber cupsole, a low padded collar, toe box perforations and the wide stable footprint of a court shoe. The flat sole descends from Bowerman's founding fixation on tread, the waffle iron obsession that produced the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer. Napped panels need dry brushing rather than washing, or they mat permanently.
