Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 February 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Fossil Stone/Coconut Milk/Sail. Nike is an American company that has spent fifty years learning to speak in other markets, from the first store in Santa Monica in 1966 to the Beaverton headquarters it moved into in 1990 and the global retail theatre it opened with the first Niketown in Portland that same year. Lunar New Year product is one of the clearest expressions of that: designs built for a calendar Nike's founders did not grow up with. This Dunk Low marks the Year of the Rabbit in Fossil Stone, a soft greyed beige that keeps the pair wearable long after the zodiac year has passed. That restraint is the smart part. Celebration colourways usually date themselves, and this one deliberately does not.
Fossil Stone is the rare celebration colourway you can wear as a basic. Recipe one: cream chinos, a white tee and a brown suede jacket, a warm neutral stack where the shoe disappears into the palette in the best way. Recipe two: black jeans and a black knit, letting the beige break up an all dark outfit at the ankle. It works for festive dinners, daytime and travel, and it is one of the few Dunks that looks correct with tailoring. Take your usual Dunk Low size. Spray with a repellent before wearing, brush dry dirt off before it works into the grain, and clean with cold water and mild soap because beige panels lighten unevenly with harsh cleaners.
The Dunk's move from a sports shoe to a cultural one followed the same path Air Force 1s and Air Max models took from the 1980s onward, first into urban and hip hop fashion and then into general casual dress through the 1990s and 2000s. What changed later is that Nike began designing for specific audiences rather than expecting one American default to travel. In India that lesson was expensive: Nike entered in 1995 through a licensing agreement with Sierra Industrial Enterprises, now SSIPL, priced roughly 30 percent above competitors and reported no net profit until the financial year ending 2019.
Fossil Stone is a warm grey beige, a colour that behaves like a neutral in every light and never demands attention. On the Dunk Low's flat panel layout that produces an almost suede like softness to the read even at a distance, with the overlay pattern showing as gentle steps rather than as hard blocks. Zodiac pairs typically carry their theme in the small details, so look at the tongue, heel and lace hardware rather than expecting a large graphic. The chassis is the standard Dunk Low: broad flat forefoot, short break in and a rubber tread that traces back to the waffle sole Bowerman pressed out in his kitchen. Beige tones stain permanently, so pre treat before the first wear.
