Culture Note™
Released on 21 July 2021 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the White/Lagoon Pulse/Metallic Silver/Speed Yellow colourway. Nike SB's most credible releases come through skate shops, the businesses that hold a local scene together, and FTC is one of the San Francisco institutions in that category. Working through shops rather than around them was the correction Nike SB had to make after taking Minor Threat's album art for a 2005 tour flyer, drawing a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and apologising that June before settling out of court. Lagoon Pulse is the colour on this one, a bright aqua that reads as water rather than as team kit, which fits a shop build meant to look like a place rather than a sponsor.
Wear one: the skate default, heavy blue or black denim with a plain white tee, hem stacked so the padded collar shows and the aqua reads as a flash at ground level. Wear two: grey sweatpants with a navy hoodie, where the bright aqua lifts a cold, flat palette without clashing. Keep other bright colours out of the fit entirely. SB builds feel snug on the first wear because of the thicker tongue, so give them a week. Clean by material rather than all at once, dry brushing napped panels and using a barely damp cloth on smooth ones, and dry away from heat since the padding holds water.
Skate shop collaborations are Nike SB's most direct claim to legitimacy, because a shop cannot be bought into a scene the way a global brand can, and its name on a shoe is a form of endorsement that has to be earned locally. That matters more here than anywhere else in Nike's catalogue, given the company's history of getting subculture wrong in public and having to apologise for it. It also connects to the wider arc in which Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, where provenance and reference knowledge have always been part of what a shoe is worth.
Style code DH7687 400 marks the SB execution of the Dunk Low, and SB is a materially different shoe from the standard model. The tongue and collar carry substantially more padding, because a skate shoe has to absorb impact through the top of the foot, and wear points that meet grip tape are reinforced. The panelled Dunk upper lets a shop insert its own materials and colour choices section by section without redrawing the silhouette. A bright aqua needs a neutral to sit against or it flattens, so expect the colour to be deployed across specific panels rather than the whole shoe. Underfoot the outsole follows Nike's traction lineage from Bowerman's waffle iron experiments.
