Hoka Bondi 9 Eucalyptus
Hoka Bondi 9 Eucalyptus
Culture Note™️
Origin
Eucalyptus takes the Bondi 9 back toward the mountains it came from. Hoka was born in Annecy, in the French Alps, in 2009, when Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard set out to run downhill faster and built an outsole with far more cushion than any running shoe of the time. A cool green is the closest a road shoe gets to that landscape, and it is a useful reminder that this is not an American brand with a fitness studio history: it is a French idea about descending, scaled up until it became one of the most recognisable silhouettes in running. The Bondi is where the cushioning goes deepest.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. First, on the road: long easy runs and steady efforts in thin technical socks, the deep stack doing its work on hard surfaces rather than technical ground. Second, in an outfit: olive or stone trousers with a cropped hem, a cream tee, a brown or khaki jacket, the eucalyptus tone sitting inside an earthy palette rather than shouting against it. Avoid wet grass and mud, which stain green mesh fastest. Brush after dry runs, clean with mild soap and cold water, air dry away from heat, and rotate with a second pair if you are running most days.
Influence
Hoka's authority still comes from ground like the Alps and the Sierra Nevada, where cushioning on long descents was decisive rather than pleasant. The brand became a mainstay at Western States and UTMB, and Jim Walmsley, signed after his 2016 Western States attempt, became its defining athlete, winning Western States multiple times and taking the 2023 UTMB title as the first American man to do so, with a course record. The road models inherited that reputation without needing the terrain. A green Bondi carries the association plainly: an alpine brand's cushioning philosophy, now worn mostly on pavement.
Construction
Green is a difficult colour on a large midsole because it can tip into either technical or decorative, and a muted eucalyptus tone stays on the technical side. Underneath, the structure follows the brand's usual logic: a midsole tuned for a low weight to cushion ratio, sidewalls that flare at the heel to widen the landing base and a frame that sinks the heel into the foam for stability by geometry rather than by a stiff post. Cool greens hold up better than white against dust but will stain in wet grass, so keep it on roads and firm paths. Brush the mesh dry rather than soaking it, and clean marks with cold water.
