Grassland places the Bondi 9 in Hoka's family of landscape names, alongside models drawn from the same imagination: Clifton, Challenger ATR, Speedgoat, Stinson, Tecton, Tennine. The Bondi is the one at the deep end of that family, the model where the cushioning goes furthest and where the brand's founding argument is least diluted. That argument was made in Annecy in 2009 by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, two former Salomon employees who wanted to run downhill faster, and who solved it with an outsole far more cushioned than anything else available. A soft green colourway makes the largest shoe in the range feel like part of the scenery.
Two ways to wear it. First, on the road: long easy runs and steady efforts in thin technical socks, the deep platform paying off most on hard surfaces and long durations. Second, in an outfit: olive or khaki trousers cropped at the ankle, a cream or white tee, a brown jacket, the green sitting inside an earth palette rather than fighting it. Skip wet grass, which marks green mesh fastest of all. Brush after dry runs, clean with mild soap and cold water, dry away from heat, and rotate pairs if you are running most days so the foam has time to come back.
The Bondi is the model that made the brand recognisable to people who do not run. Its rise came from three directions: ultramarathon and trail racing, where cushioning on long descents was decisive; hospital floors, where staff on twelve hour shifts adopted the road models and told everyone; and fashion, where the maximal silhouette was read as running's answer to the chunky sneaker. Landscape toned colourways belong to that last chapter, when the palette shifted from race kit brightness to something you could wear with normal clothes. The engineering did not change, only the register it speaks in.
Muted green on a maximal midsole is a balancing act, since the colour has to be strong enough to justify the surface area and calm enough not to shout. What it covers is consistent: a midsole engineered for a low weight to cushion ratio, a wide flared heel that spreads the landing, and a foot frame that seats the heel inside the foam rather than on top, so support arrives through geometry rather than through a stiff post. Green mesh handles dust well and wet grass badly, which is worth knowing if you run parks. Brush it dry after runs and clean marks with cold water before they set.
