Culture Note™
The name on the side of this shoe means something specific: Hoka comes from a Maori phrase meaning to fly, and on 22 December 2021 the company shortened itself from a longer version of that name to simply Hoka, saying the shorter form was easier on the lips. A colourway literally called Hoka Blue is the brand painting its own name on its most-worn model. The Clifton 10 is the daily trainer that took the founding French idea of an oversized cushioned platform, born in Annecy in 2009, and made it light enough for everyone. In a saturated house blue it becomes the most brand-forward pair in the line.
Run it and wear it. On the road: Hoka Blue Clifton 10 with black shorts and a white tee, the blue doing all the work, best across easy and steady daily mileage. Off duty: grey sweatpants or dark denim with a white or navy crew, where a single strong blue reads as deliberate rather than sporty. Fit is true to length with a standard toe box. Keep a firmer shoe for track work so this pair holds its cushion longer. Brush loose dirt, wipe with mild soap and a damp cloth, pull the insole out to dry after wet runs, and keep it away from machines and radiators.
For a company that reported 1.8 billion dollars in revenue in 2024, Hoka took a long time to look like a brand rather than a solution. It arrived in 2009 as a deliberate contradiction, going thick when the industry went minimal, and got labelled maximalist for it. It reached the United States in 2010 only because Boulder Running Company bought the entire first run of six hundred pairs. Deckers acquired it in 2013 and distribution finally scaled. A colourway named after the brand itself is what confidence looks like at the end of that arc, on the model that carried the most people to it.
Clifton construction is an exercise in restraint everywhere except the midsole. The upper is a light engineered mesh with as few overlays as the foot will tolerate, because the model's reason to exist is the low weight to cushion ratio the brand was founded on. Underfoot, the stack is deep and the geometry is rockered, so instead of levering off a flat sole you roll forward through the stride. The wide flared heel and the sidewall that seats the heel inside the midsole handle stability without adding a firm post. Hoka Blue puts the strongest colour on the midsole sidewall, which is where the brand has always wanted your eye.
