Hoka Mach 6 Forest Lichen
Hoka Mach 6 Forest Lichen
Culture Note™️
Origin
Forest Lichen is a trail colour on a shoe built for speed, and that combination is very much Hoka. The Mach sits on the lighter, faster side of the line, where the brand has to prove that its cushioning philosophy does not cost you pace. That question has been answered most publicly by Jim Walmsley, signed shortly after his 2016 Western States attempt, a multiple Western States champion who in 2023 became the first American man to win UTMB, setting a course record. A muted green with earthy tones connects a road oriented shoe back to the mountain racing where the company earned the right to talk about speed at all.
Utility
Two ways to use it. First, as a faster training shoe: tempo runs, progression efforts and steady days where you want a lighter feel underfoot, worn with thin technical socks. Second, as casual wear: olive or stone trousers cropped at the ankle, a cream or black tee, a green or brown jacket, the colourway working as an earth tone rather than as sportswear. Do a few shorter runs before any hard session so your calves settle into the rolling profile. Brush after dry runs, clean with mild soap and cold water, air dry away from heat, and never leave it crushed in a kit bag.
Influence
Hoka's authority in fast running comes from the ultra world, where the brand became a mainstay at Western States and UTMB, and where it is now title sponsor. Walmsley is the defining athlete of that story, and Mike Wardian is another sponsored ultrarunner in the roster. That heritage gives a lighter Hoka a different flavour from a track brand's speed shoe: the reference point is a long mountain race with brutal descents, not a stadium. Wearing a green Mach is a nod to that lineage, an urban shoe with its imagination somewhere above the tree line.
Construction
Lighter Hoka models are an exercise in restraint, keeping the platform substantial while cutting everything that is not carrying load, in service of the low weight to cushion ratio the brand designs around. The rocker geometry it uses across the line matters more as pace rises, since a rounded sole and a low heel to toe drop encourage the foot to roll through the stride rather than pause at the front. Green and earth toned uppers are forgiving on dry dusty ground and less so in wet grass, where staining sets fast. Brush dust out of the mesh regularly, because fine grit wears thin fabric from the inside of the weave.
