Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 17 February 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Fire Red/Cement Grey/Summit White. Bred, black and red, is the palette Jordan Brand treats as its own, and the Air Jordan 4 is one of the two or three shapes that wears it best. Reimagined signals that this is a reworked take on the original rather than a straight archive reissue, which is a licence the division has held since Nike made it standalone in 1997 with its own athlete roster, apparel and collaborations. This is the pre school size run, which is a specific kind of product: not a scaled down collectible, but a real shoe for children whose parents grew up with the colours. The heritage is being handed down rather than sold back.
Two ways to dress it. First, simple: black joggers or dark denim with a plain tee, so the red accents are the only colour and the shoe leads. Second, school ready: navy or grey shorts with white socks pulled up, which keeps the black upper from looking heavy in warm weather. For a pre school fit, leave a thumb width at the toe and re check every few months rather than buying long and waiting. Wipe with a damp cloth after playground use, brush the outsole out, avoid the washing machine entirely, and dry away from radiators so the midsole and glue lines are not stressed.
Black and red is the palette that started an argument the culture never finished. The Banned campaign was built on the NBA rule that shoes be at least 51 percent white, with Nike paying a 5,000 dollar per game fine instead of redesigning, and the shoe the league cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype rather than the Air Jordan I. From there the line went into records, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers, and Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising. The 4 also became a collaboration canvas through Travis Scott's Cactus Jack run across the 1, 4 and 6.
The 4 is a structured, panelled basketball shoe from the Tinker Hatfield era that began with the Air Jordan III, and it holds the foot through the midfoot rather than relying on collar height. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the Air Jordan II and sits under this over a rubber outsole. In a pre school make the practical differences are what matter: easier entry, softer collar padding and closures that a child can actually manage. Black uppers with red accents are the most forgiving combination for kids, since scuffs read grey rather than bright, and a quick wipe restores most of it. Check fit often, because feet at this age change fast.
