    Culture Note™

Designed by Benjamin Nethongkome and released on 3 August 2022 as part of the Kyrie Infinity line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Light Marine/Medium Blue/Iron Grey. Smoke and Mirrors is a shifting, layered grey and dark palette on a guard's basketball shoe, and the name suits a design built around misdirection on court. The Kyrie Infinity belongs to Nike's signature line business, a model the company invented in 1984 when it signed Michael Jordan and turned an endorsement into an entire operation, marketed through Spike Lee playing Mars Blackmon. Every signature shoe since works on that template: a specific player's movement pattern turned into a specific outsole and upper. The EP designation points at an engineered build for particular court surfaces. In a smoked, tonal colourway, the shoe reads as equipment first, which is the correct order for this category.
On court: play them indoors with performance socks and shorts, and wipe the outsole between games so the traction pattern keeps its bite. Off court: black cargo trousers and a grey hoodie, where the smoked palette lets a performance shoe pass as a lifestyle one, or grey sweats with a black shell for a full tonal look. Fit is snug and low volume, typical of guard shoes, so size up half if your foot is wide and always try with playing socks. Care: never machine wash, brush the upper dry, clean the outsole with a damp cloth, air dry away from heat, and retire them once the traction rounds off.
Nike is the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, the WNBA and the NBA G League, a position it has held since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. That is why its basketball shoes are read as the sport's default rather than one option among many. The signature category itself descends from the 1984 Jordan signing and continues through athletes including LeBron James and Kevin Durant. The wider cultural effect is older than any single deal: from the 1980s onward Nike's basketball models became status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion and then everyday American footwear.
Guard shoes are engineered around stopping and starting rather than height, so expect a curved, low profile outsole with a traction pattern designed for hard lateral cuts, a rounded midsole that helps the foot roll through direction changes, and a snug upper that keeps the foot over the platform. Nike's cushioning here comes from Air, a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, and its weight saving comes from ideas like Flywire, cabling that holds the foot using minimal upper material. The Smoke and Mirrors treatment is a finish over that engineering, not a change to it, so the shoe still plays. Traction rubber wears quickly on outdoor courts, which is worth planning around.
