    Culture Note™

Designed by Tate Kuerbis and released on 31 August 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 36 line. This release has a textile upper in Chile Red/University Red/Black/Metallic Gold. El Matador is a Luka Doncic colourway on the Air Jordan 36, and Doncic is a signature NBA athlete for the brand, which is the highest tier of relationship it grants a player. That tier only exists because of what happened in 1997, when the line was restructured as Jordan Brand, a standalone Nike division with its own athlete roster rather than a single signature model. Before that, there was one name on the shoe. The 36 is a modern performance model, deep in the numbered sequence, built for players rather than for shelves, and a signature colourway on it is aimed squarely at people who actually play in the shoe.
This one is a playing shoe first. Recipe one: on court, compression tights under shorts, a fitted jersey, and a low performance sock, since a knit upper against a thick sock loses the fit it was designed around. Recipe two: off court, black tech trousers with a cuffed hem, a plain zip up, and the shoe left visible, which suits the sculpted modern silhouette better than baggy denim. Buy true to length with a snug width, since knit stretches sideways but not lengthwise. Do not machine wash a knit upper. Brush dust off dry, spot clean with mild soap, and let it dry fully between sessions so the knit recovers.
Doncic sits on a roster that also carries Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson as signature athletes, plus signed players including Russell Westbrook, Trae Young and Chris Paul, and the brand extends well past basketball into NFL, MLB and WNBA rosters. A named player colourway on a current performance model is the purest version of what the original 1984 arrangement was: Nike buying a young player's identity because it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own. The mechanism has not changed, only the number of faces it now runs in parallel.
From the thirtieth model onward the line moved to Flyknit uppers, which changed how a Jordan holds a foot: instead of layered leather panels doing the containment, a knitted upper is engineered to be tighter in some zones and softer in others, so the shoe feels closer to a sock with structure added where you cut. The line also uses carbon fibre shank plates for torsional stiffness, which is what stops a basketball shoe twisting when you plant and change direction. Expect a snug entry that loosens slightly as the knit relaxes, then holds. Lace fully to the top for play, since a knit upper without full lacing lets the heel travel.
