Part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Silver. Black and silver is the 1906R at its most machine-like. The model revives New Balance's early 2000s performance running language, all engineered panels and hard geometry, and stripping it to black with silver detailing removes the last trace of casual softness. What you get is a shoe that looks specified rather than styled. That reading is fair to the brand's actual history, because New Balance's reputation was built on technical fit rather than image: the company started in 1906 making arch supports, and the Trackster of 1960 was the first running shoe offered in varying widths, a fitting idea that spread through YMCA fitness programmes and college cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University.
Blacked-out technical shoes are the easiest thing to wear and the easiest thing to waste. Recipe one is full black utility: black nylon trousers, a black zip through, a grey beanie, where the silver detail is the only light in the outfit. Recipe two breaks it: dark indigo denim with a heavy grey knit, so the silver picks up the grey and the shoe stops reading as a shadow. It handles rain and city grime better than pale pairs and suits evening wear and travel. Metallic detailing scuffs, so avoid brushing it hard. Wipe the upper with a damp cloth, use mild soap on the black panels only, and dry away from direct heat.
Y2K running aesthetics came back through New Balance more convincingly than through anyone else, because the brand actually made those shoes for runners rather than for hype. The reappraisal began with plainness: the 990 family became the American dad shoe, worn by documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and once that was fashionable the harder, more technical archive followed. New Balance's collaboration programme reinforces it, built on designers and independents such as Aime Leon Dore, whose founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018, and Action Bronson across several models. Black and silver is that world without a collaborator's name attached.
Black uppers hide seams, so silver has to carry the drawing. Here the metallic detailing picks out the overlays, the panel divisions and the side wall block N against a blacked-out base, which is how a technical runner keeps its structure visible in a dark colourway. The 1906R's ancestry is performance running, so the fit is closer and more locked down than a lifestyle model. New Balance's midsole philosophy explains the ride: ENCAP puts a moulded polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core so the shoe supports rather than sinks and does not compress flat over time, while ABZORB is the softer blend aimed at dispersing heel strike. Choose your width fitting first, then think about length.
