New Balance 9060 Chrome Blue
New Balance 9060 Chrome Blue
Culture Note™️
Origin
Released on 10 April 2024 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Chrome Blue/Light Chrome Blue/Elemental Blue. There are two New Balances working at once right now. One is the purist project, Made in USA under Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis, who was appointed creative director of that line in April 2021, treating the archive with total seriousness. The other is the 9060, which takes the same 99x source material and deliberately distorts it into something the running division would never have approved. Chrome Blue belongs firmly to the second. Chrome brings a bright reflective surface into a family built on matte greys and suedes, and the blue underneath gives it a cold, synthetic character. It is the archive processed through a filter rather than restored.
Utility
Look one: all black, black wide trousers and a black shell jacket, so the chrome is the only reflective surface in the outfit and does all the talking. Look two: light grey sweats with a blue or navy top, a softer combination where the blue is echoed above and the chrome reads as jewellery rather than armour. Cropped hems only, since covering the midsole wastes the shape. Clean reflective panels with a soft dry cloth and a barely damp one for marks, never a brush or a solvent. Store them in a box away from sunlight and other shoes that could scratch the finish.
Influence
New Balance's plainness is what the culture fell in love with, from the 990 family becoming the archetypal American dad shoe to normcore and then high fashion reclaiming grey suede as a design position through the 2010s. The 9060 is what happens after that battle is won: once the archive is respected, a brand can afford to disfigure it. Chrome Blue is aimed at people who bought into New Balance through fashion rather than through running, and who want the family resemblance without the restraint. It photographs unusually well, which is not an accident given the audience it was drawn for.
Construction
A chrome finish changes how you experience the shoe hour to hour, since the panels throw light and shift tone as you move, which is why this colourway looks so different indoors and out. It is also the least forgiving surface New Balance sells: reflective materials show scratches, creases and dulling far more clearly than leather or mesh, and a stiff brush will permanently flatten the shine. Blue does the grounding work below it so the shoe is not simply a mirror. Underneath the styling sits the brand's oldest technical logic, engineered volume and multiple width fittings, which is what stops a shoe this bulky from feeling sloppy on the foot.
