Origin
Released on 12 July 2024 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a leather upper. Neon Nights is the 9060 refusing to behave. Where the model usually trades in greys, taupes and earths, this pack drops fluorescent accent colour into the shape, using the shoe's exaggerated panelling as a canvas for brightness instead of restraint. That contrast only works because the underlying silhouette is so recognisably archival, drawn from the 99x running family that runs from the 990 in 1982 through the 991, 992 and 993 and on to the 990v6. New Balance is unusual in being able to do this at all. It has stayed privately held since Jim Davis bought the company in 1972, so it can gamble on a shape this odd without needing to explain the risk to a public market.
Utility
A neon pack asks the rest of your outfit to stay quiet. Recipe one is monochrome ground: black nylon track trousers, a black hoodie, a black cap, letting the fluorescent hits be the only colour anywhere. Recipe two is washed denim and a grey sweat, where the neon reads playful rather than technical and stops the outfit sinking. Give it trouser width, since the 9060 is bulbous and a slim leg makes it look accidental. Best for evenings, gigs, weekend city wear and anywhere low light rewards a bright shoe. Bright synthetic panels dull with dirt faster than they fade, so wipe them clean after wear, use mild soap on a soft cloth and never machine wash a layered upper like this.
Influence
New Balance earned the right to be strange by being boring first. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort not status, with Steve Jobs a documented wearer and Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff documented in the model, and the 2010s reclaimed exactly that plainness as a design stance. The 9060 pushes past reclamation into remix, and a neon pack is the most obvious signal of that shift. The brand's collaboration culture supports the same instinct, built around designers and independents rather than mass celebrity, from Aime Leon Dore and Teddy Santis over Made in USA to Action Bronson across several models including a 990v6 Baklava. Loud colour is a natural extension of that community.
Construction
The Neon Nights treatment is about placement. A pack built on night-time fluorescents puts its brightest tones on the smaller panels, the overlays and the side wall block N, so the eye reads glow against a darkened base rather than an all-over shout, and the 9060's sculpted midsole shaping stays legible. Expect a heavy, layered upper and a lot of underfoot volume, which is the whole point of a 99x derived shape. The cushioning philosophy behind that lineage is New Balance's own ENCAP approach, a polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core so the shoe stays structured while still absorbing impact instead of compressing flat. As with every New Balance, the width fitting is the fit lever that matters most.
