Origin
Released on 2 January 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Outerspace/Castlerock/Silver Metallic. Outerspace is a dark navy with the blue drained almost out of it, a colour that behaves like black in low light and reveals itself outdoors. On the 9060 it does something useful: the shoe is built from exaggerated 99x running references, all swollen panels and warped seams, and a near black navy keeps that complexity from turning into noise. New Balance has spent its whole life selling shoes people wear rather than shoes people display, from the arch supports it made in 1906 through to the running trainers that got adopted by everybody except runners. A dark, quiet 9060 is that instinct applied to the loudest silhouette the brand currently makes.
Utility
Outerspace works as a black alternative that keeps a little warmth. First recipe: black wide trousers with a navy crewneck and a grey scarf, a tonal winter fit where the shoe is the darkest point. Second: raw indigo jeans with a cream knit and a navy chore coat, letting the shoe finish the denim rather than fight it. Keep the leg wide or straight, because the 9060's mass needs volume above it, and let the hem sit on the shoe. Sizing runs slightly long for some, so try if you are between sizes. Brush suede regularly to lift dust, protect before first wear, and avoid wet ground since the pale midsole edge will show it.
Influence
The 99x family this shoe distorts became famous for being unremarkable. Steve Jobs was a documented wearer of the 990, as were Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and none of them were making a statement by it. That ordinariness became a design position when normcore and then high fashion reclaimed it in the 2010s, and New Balance made the shift official by appointing Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. The 9060 is the archive exaggerated rather than reissued, and a near black navy is how people wear it who want the shape without the attention.
Construction
Layered mesh with suede and synthetic overlays in graded outerspace tones, panelled so the darker sections read as depth rather than as separate colours, with the block N set into the side wall. Underneath is the stacked wavy midsole carrying visible ABZORB, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend, engineered to disperse heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips. It is a plusher and lighter approach than the ENCAP polyurethane and EVA construction under the 990 and 574, and less structurally supportive, tuned for standing and walking. Dark navy suede is forgiving of scuffs but shows dust and lint clearly, so a brush is more useful than a cleaner here.
