Part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Sea Salt. Sea Salt Black is the sharpest way to read the women's 327. The model is New Balance's most graphic modern shoe, taking the low profile and flared outsole of its older racing shapes and scaling the block N until it spans the side wall. Running an off white base against a black N gives that logo maximum contrast, so the whole shoe becomes a piece of typography that you happen to walk in. There is a certain nerve in a company that spent a century selling arch support and width fittings deciding that its own house mark, the block N, is interesting enough to be the entire design.
Wear it with cropped black trousers and a white tee, so the shoe's contrast repeats the outfit's, socks black or white with nothing in between. The second recipe is easier, mid wash denim with a cream knit, where the off white base softens the graphic and the black N stays as the punctuation. This is a flat, low shoe for city days and evenings rather than long walking or training. Off white suede needs early protection and dry brushing, and the flared outsole sidewall collects road film fast, so wipe it down regularly with a damp cloth to keep the contrast clean.
The 327 only makes sense as the end point of a long reclamation. New Balance's cultural life was mostly accidental, built by people who wore its shoes for comfort rather than status, and when normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness through the 2010s the brand's own visual language became the asset. A shoe that is essentially a giant block N is the confident conclusion. It fits a design programme that has always preferred designers and independents, from Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 to Action Bronson across several models, over mass celebrity endorsement.
The upper mixes suede and mesh with synthetic panels, the oversized N cut as a structural piece rather than printed, sea salt off white carrying the base while black takes the logo and selected panels so the contrast stays hard. The outsole flares out beyond the upper and wraps up at the heel, which gives the 327 its stance and its footprint on pavement. This is a low, firm shoe rather than a cushioned one, with none of the bulk that the brand's ABZORB and ENCAP runners carry. New Balance's multiple width fittings are its oldest technical promise, and on a slim shoe like this the right width matters more than an extra half size of length.
