New Balance Xc-72 Black Moonbeam
New Balance Xc-72 Black Moonbeam
Culture Note™️
Origin
Released on 13 November 2021 and part of the XC-72 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Moonbeam. The XC-72 is a shoe about a year rather than about a model. In 1972 a 28 year old Jim Davis bought New Balance when it had six employees making around thirty pairs a day, sold mostly by mail order, and the company that grew from that point built itself on domestic manufacturing and technical fit. The XC-72 reaches back into the cross country and road racing shapes of that era, low and narrow and flat, then rebuilds them with a curved sole and a stance that could only be current. Black Moonbeam gives it the sharpest possible reading, a black upper cut against a pale off white sole so the silhouette shows as outline rather than as detail.
Utility
Black over a moonbeam sole is high contrast, which means the shape gets noticed even in a plain outfit. First recipe: black tapered trousers with a black knit, where the pale sole draws a line under the whole fit. Second: raw indigo jeans and a grey crewneck, letting the contrast do the work instead of colour. The curved sole makes these better for walking than for standing still. Because they run narrow, consider a wider fitting rather than a longer size. Keep the moonbeam midsole off wet ground, since a pale sole under a black upper shows every mark, and clean it with a soft brush and mild soap rather than anything harsh.
Influence
Alongside the accidental fame of its grey running shoes, New Balance's other long thread is running itself, from the Trackster of 1960 spreading through YMCA programmes and cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University, to its sponsorship of New York Road Runners. That keeps the brand anchored in amateur running rather than in celebrity sport, and the XC-72 is an object made from that anchor. It also belongs to the reappraisal that turned the archive into a fashion line, formalised when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. Black on a pale sole is that idea at its most graphic.
Construction
A mixed upper of mesh with suede and synthetic overlays, layered in narrow racing panels across the black base, with the block N stretched along the side wall and moonbeam picking out the midsole and trim. The XC-72 rides on a curved EVA midsole with a pronounced toe spring, which is why it rolls forward as you walk rather than sitting flat like a 574. A segmented rubber outsole handles flex under the forefoot. It is light for its visual size and cut on a narrower racing last than most New Balance lifestyle shoes, so the multiple width fittings the brand has offered since its arch support days are the right tool if your foot is broad.
