    Culture Note™

Designed by Jerry Lorenzo and released on 2 November 2019 as part of Nike's Air Fear of God 1 line. This release has the Multi-Color/String/Oatmeal/Pale Ivory colourway. Nike did not begin as a designer of shoes. It began on 25 January 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, a distributor moving Onitsuka Tiger runners out of Phil Knight's car at Oregon track meets, and only launched its own line under the Nike name after the Japanese relationship ended in 1972. Six decades on, the company is secure enough to hand a basketball silhouette to an outside label, which is what the Air Fear of God 1 is. The Oatmeal treatment pulls every trace of team colour out of it and leaves a pale, sand toned high top that reads closer to a studio garment than a game shoe. It sits in the lineage Michael Jordan opened in 1984, when Nike learned a basketball shoe could carry an entire wardrobe.
Recipe one: ecru wide leg trousers, an oversized grey knit, collar left standing so the shoe reads as part of the outfit instead of a base under it. Recipe two: black tapered joggers cuffed above the ankle beneath a long charcoal overshirt, the pale shoe holding the only light note in the fit. This is off duty and evening footwear, not training gear, so wet pavement is its enemy. Padded high tops sit best with a normal weight sock rather than a thin one, which also keeps the collar from gapping. Brush dry, use a light foam cleaner instead of soaking, and store away from direct sun, which yellows pale materials faster than wear does.
Nike's route into fashion ran through basketball, and through basketball into hip hop. After the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising, Nike basketball shoes moved from sport into mainstream American youth dress and then into urban style as status objects, a position Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models have held since the 1980s. The Fear of God partnership sits at the far end of that arc, made for people who read basketball as a source of silhouette rather than a sport they are dressing for. Oatmeal makes the argument loudest by being the quietest colourway available, which is why it lands with a styling crowd rather than a courtside one.
This is a high top riding on Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole that Nike first made visible on the 1987 Air Max and has used as a cushioning platform ever since. Worked in a single tonal register, the Oatmeal build leans on texture and panel shape rather than contrast, so your eye travels the shoe by its seams. The tall collar asks a decision of you: cover the ankle or expose it deliberately. Nothing here shouts. Pale uppers of this kind mark fast, so treat the shoe the way you treat a light garment, cleaning before dirt sets rather than after it has had a week to settle in.
