Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 4 September 2024 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/University Red/Black. Bred is black and red, and the name comes from the earliest days of Nike's basketball history rather than from this shoe. One correction is worth keeping straight, because it is repeated constantly and it is wrong: the NBA did not ban the Air Jordan 1. The shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, Nike paid the fines and built a campaign around the story. What survives from that episode is the colour pairing itself, which became shorthand for the whole era. Applied to an Air Force 1 07, it is one lineage borrowing the vocabulary of another inside the same house.
Recipe one: black jeans with a black tee and a red accent somewhere above the waist, a cap or a jacket lining, so the shoe belongs to a deliberate two colour scheme rather than sitting alone. Recipe two: raw indigo denim with a grey hoodie, letting the black and red block be the only strong statement in an otherwise muted fit. Air Force 1s run large for most feet, so half a size down is common. Dark uppers hide wear but show salt clearly in winter. Clean promptly, use shoe trees to keep toe creasing shallow, and store in a box away from sunlight, which fades red faster than any other colour.
Nike's move into hip hop and mainstream American youth dress came through basketball, following the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising, and Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models have functioned as status objects in urban style ever since. Black and red is the most quoted colour combination in that entire history. It is used as a reference rather than a design choice at this point, which is why it appears across models and generations. Wearing it on an Air Force 1 is a way of invoking that history on the least complicated silhouette the company makes.
This is the standard Air Force 1 07 architecture: a substantial upper, a wide flat outsole and Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, doing the cushioning underneath. Black with red is high contrast, which means the panel edges read hard and the shoe looks sharper and slightly smaller than a tonal pair does. Dark uppers are forgiving about scuffs and unforgiving about dust and salt, and a white or contrasting midsole becomes the part that dates the shoe fastest. Clean the midsole separately with a sponge, treat the upper with a foam cleaner and a soft brush, and keep the pair out of the washing machine entirely.
