Culture Note™
Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 29 September 2023 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Oil Green/Oil Green/Cargo Khaki. The Air Force 1 Low '07 is the standard issue version of the most consistently worn shoe Nike makes, and LX is the label the company uses when the materials get an upgrade. Oil Green pulls the silhouette away from its default white and into a deep, slightly military green, a colour that changes what the shoe is for: less summer uniform, more autumn workwear. The model itself comes from the run of years after 1980, when Nike held roughly half of the US athletic shoe market, went public, and started producing basketball shoes that would outlive their sport entirely.
Two builds. Utility tonal: olive or black cargo trousers with a canvas jacket, treating oil green as a workwear neutral rather than a colour. Sharp contrast: cream or tan trousers with a brown knit, where the green becomes the anchor at the bottom of a warm outfit. Air Force 1s run large, so half a size down is standard. Keep the midsole clean from the beginning, since white foam yellows and drags the whole shoe down with it, and avoid rain, because heavy leather uppers take water spots and salt marks that never fully lift.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Air Force 1 became the most literal expression of that, a shoe worn daily in cities where a fresh pair says something specific about self presentation. Air Jordans and Air Max models carried the same weight, then returned through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Green is a deliberate departure from the white on white orthodoxy of this silhouette, and that is the point of buying it: the shape is instantly recognisable, so the colour is the only place left to say anything new.
The Air Force 1 formula does not change: a thick leather upper, a padded collar, a heavy midsole with Air cushioning sealed inside, and a circular pivot pattern on the outsole. Nike Air is pressurised gas held in the midsole, the technology the company later chose to show off from the 1987 Air Max onward, though here it stays hidden under white foam. An LX treatment usually means richer leather or added detailing, which is worth protecting: condition sparingly and evenly so a deep green does not blotch, wipe rather than soak, and keep the white midsole clean because it is the only bright element on the shoe.
