Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 3 March 2023 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/Phantom/Sail/Photon Dust. The Air Max 1 is the shoe that started the argument. When the Air Max arrived in 1987, Nike took the pressurised gas unit it had been sealing invisibly into midsoles and cut a window so you could see it, which made the cushioning itself into the design. Everything visible in the Air Max line since then descends from that decision. This women's pair returns to the original 87 proportions rather than a modern reissue shape, and dresses them in Summit White and Phantom with a safari print treatment, so the loudest element is texture rather than colour. It is the most restrained way to wear a shoe whose entire reason for existing was showing off what was inside it.
First: cream or oatmeal wide leg trousers with a white tee and a grey overshirt, an all pale outfit where the safari texture is the only pattern and the shoe stays the focus. Second: light wash straight leg denim with a black fine knit, where the white base sharpens the whole look and the print picks up in daylight. Best for dry days, city walking and warm weather. Air Max 1 patterns tend to run slightly narrow, so try true to size and consider half up if you have a wide forefoot. Protect suede and printed panels before first wear, brush dry, clean the leather with mild soap on a damp cloth and never machine wash.
The Air Max 1 turned a technical feature into a cultural one, and the line that followed became a fixture of urban and hip hop dress from the 1980s onward before running through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Air Max models have particularly deep roots in European city dress, where the 1 is treated less as a running shoe than as a default. Safari print is one of the motifs the Air Max family keeps returning to, and it works because the silhouette is busy enough to carry pattern without collapsing. On a white and phantom base it reads as considered rather than nostalgic.
The 87 build means slimmer proportions than a contemporary Air Max, with a lower profile mudguard and a more compact toe box that changes how the whole silhouette sits on the foot. The upper mixes leather, suede and mesh in Summit White and Phantom, with the safari print carried on selected panels as a textured contrast against flat white, which is what stops an all pale shoe reading as blank. The heel window shows sealed pressurised Nike Air, the 1987 innovation, and the outsole traces the waffle logic Bill Bowerman created by pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron. Pale suede is the weak point in wet weather, so protect it before wear rather than after.
