Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 26 March 2022 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has a denim upper in Multi-Color/Multi-Color/Sail. The Air Max 1 is the shoe that made cushioning visible. When the Air Max line arrived in 1987, Nike cut a window into the midsole and exposed the pressurised gas unit it had been hiding, turning an engineering solution into the design feature the whole family is built on. Everything since, every visible bubble on every Nike, traces back to that decision. This is the SP version made with Concepts under the name Far Out, and it ships in a special box, which tells you how the release is meant to be read: as an object with packaging that is part of the product. Style code DN1803 500 puts it in Nike's purple range, so expect the colour story to carry the psychedelic reading the name promises.
Two ways to wear it. First, let it lead: dark straight jeans or black nylon trousers, a plain heavyweight tee, a dark jacket, nothing else competing, so the colourway is the whole outfit. Second, the casual European fit: light wash denim, a tonal knit or track jacket picking up one colour from the upper, a cap. Suited to dry days, gigs, travel and anywhere you want a talking point. Air Max 1s fit fairly true but narrow, so consider half a size up if your feet are wide. Keep the mesh dry, clean the midsole with a foam safe cleaner rather than harsh solvent, and hold on to the special box because it is part of what you bought.
Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward, sitting alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s as status markers in urban and hip hop fashion, then returning through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. In Europe the Air Max 1 in particular became a subcultural fixture in its own right. Retailer collaborations are the modern extension of that culture: a shop with its own following gets to write a chapter of a silhouette's story, and the audience treats it as a limited artefact rather than stock. The Air Max 1 is a layered upper of panels and overlays sitting on a midsole with a visible Air window at the heel, and that window is the reason the shoe looks the way it does. Nike Air is a sealed pressurised gas unit rather than foam, which is why the cushioning stays consistent long after a foam only midsole has flattened. SP builds are where Nike allows unusual materials and finishes, and a themed release like Far Out typically leans on colour blocking and surface treatment across the mudguard, quarter and heel.
