Origin
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 7 February 2019 as part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has the Black/Black/Cone/White colourway. The Air Max line began in 1987 with a simple, radical decision: take the pressurised gas unit Nike had been sealing inside its midsoles and cut a window so people could see it. The Air Max 90 is the shape that turned that idea into an icon, with the sculpted mudguard panels that make it recognisable in silhouette alone. OFF-Black is the near monochrome make up, a deep charcoal leaning black across the upper that quiets the model's usual colour blocking and lets the panelling and the visible unit carry the shoe on their own. It is the Air Max 90 for people who like the shape more than the noise.
Utility
Two ways to run it. Black tapered joggers and a grey hoodie, an all dark outfit where the shoe is texture rather than colour. Or lift it: dark indigo denim with a stone jacket and a white tee, using the shoe as the grounding element. Near black pairs are the most weather tolerant Air Max 90s, though mesh still soaks in heavy rain. Size true, since this model fits snug through the toe. Brush mesh dry, use a mild foam on synthetic overlays, protect any suede panels with a spray, and keep the visible unit away from sharp impacts because a punctured window cannot be repaired.
Influence
Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s from the 1980s onward and reappeared throughout 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. The 90 became the everyday runner in that group, worn far more on pavements than on tracks. Nike made visible cushioning into a design language before anyone treated engineering as fashion, and a blacked out version proves the point: strip every colour and the shoe is still unmistakable from thirty paces because of its shape and its window.
Construction
A running shoe upper built from mesh and synthetic or leather overlays, with the layered mudguard panels running from toe to heel, mounted on a foam midsole carrying the visible Air unit and a waffle influenced rubber outsole. The waffle tread traces directly to Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron in pursuit of lighter soles, the founding piece of Nike engineering. In a near black make up the panel edges become the only thing separating one layer from the next, so the shoe reads as a single sculpted mass. The ride is soft at the heel and firm at the forefoot, and the low toe box means it fits close through the front.
