Culture Note™
Released on 6 July 2023 and part of Nike's Air Max Solo line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Pure Platinum/Black. Air Max Solo is the plainest way into the most recognisable idea Nike has. The Air Max line began in 1987 with a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole and, crucially, made visible, which turned cushioning from an invisible engineering claim into the design itself. Everything the company has built in that family since is a variation on showing you the thing that supports you. Solo is the pared back version, aimed at daily wear rather than at a technical run, and Black White is the arrangement that has always suited that job best: a dark upper that keeps its shape in the eye and a light sole that makes the platform underneath legible.
Two ways to wear it. Black tapered joggers and a black tee, which lets the white midsole draw the only horizontal line in the outfit and keeps the whole thing sharp for travel or a gym commute. Or mid wash jeans with a grey sweatshirt and a black jacket, the standard everyday build where the shoe supplies structure at the floor. This is a walking and standing shoe rather than a training one, and the cushioning makes it good for long days on hard surfaces. Size true. For care, clean the white midsole weekly with a magic sponge, wipe the black upper with a damp cloth, and never dry it near heat because a heated Air unit and midsole will deform.
Air Max is the family that carried Nike furthest outside sport. After the Jordan signing of 1984 and the Mars Blackmon advertising Spike Lee directed made the brand central to basketball and, through basketball, to hip hop, Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress and then reappeared across 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes. The visible Air unit was a large part of why. A shoe that displays its own technology is a shoe people can recognise at a glance, and recognisability is what turns product into culture.
Black over white is a functional split as much as a visual one. The dark upper hides creasing, dust and the marks a shoe collects from being worn every day, while the white midsole makes the height and shape of the Air Max platform obvious from the side. Nike Air is the underlying technology by name: gas sealed under pressure inside the midsole to absorb landing forces, the same principle the company has used since the first Air Max. Expect a taller ride than a flat court shoe and a softer landing, with the tradeoff that the white sidewall is the one part of this pair that will always look older than the rest of it.
