Racing colourways are signals, not decoration. A marathon field is thousands of people in dark clothing, and a shoe in Glam Orange with pulse purple and a dynasty tone is designed to be picked out by a camera at 30 kilometres. The engineering under the colour comes from Nike's 2017 breakthrough, when the Vaporfly matched ZoomX foam with a full length carbon fibre plate and independent research found the combination could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. The Alphafly Next% 3 is the most aggressive expression of that work, and this pair wears it in the brightest register the line offers.
Two uses. Race day: black or white kit head to toe so the orange and purple carry the whole visual identity, with thin socks and a shoe you have already run in at least once. Sharpening session: use it for the marathon paced effort where confidence matters, then rest it. Sizing is snug through the midfoot with a low volume upper, so try it with your race socks and do not size up for comfort you will not need. Keep the mileage limited and purposeful, because racing foam has a finite useful life and bright uppers show every mile of dirt they take.
Nike's authority in this category was earned on track, starting with Steve Prefontaine, the first track athlete it endorsed and now a statue at its Beaverton headquarters, then Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix. The modern marathon has become a technology story as much as a sporting one, and Nike is the company that made it so. A loud racing colourway is not vanity in that context: it is the visual language of a start corral where everyone knows what a plated shoe is and can identify one from behind at a hundred metres.
A super shoe is an assembly of extremes: a very light upper, a tall stack of responsive foam, a stiff plate that resists the toe bending, and Air Zoom units in the family of pressurised gas cushioning Nike has been sealing into midsoles and showing off since the 1987 Air Max. The result is a shoe with a distinct rolling feel that suits a quick, forward cadence and punishes a slow, heavy one. The regulation frame is public: on 31 January 2020 World Athletics capped sole thickness at 40mm, allowed one rigid plate and required general retail availability.
