Released on 20 February 2024 and part of the Downshifter line. This release has a mesh upper in Midnight Navy/Black/White/Pure Platinum. Not every Nike is a flagship, and the Downshifter is proof that the company still builds for the runner who is starting rather than racing. That is closer to the founding brief than any super shoe: in 1964 Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight sold 1,300 pairs of Japanese running shoes for about 8,000 dollars out of the boot of a car, aimed at ordinary runners who had no good options. The thirteenth Downshifter carries that everyday intent into a Midnight Navy colourway, dark enough to disappear into work clothes and plain enough to wear five days a week without anyone reading it as a statement.
Two uses. Gym and errands: navy or black joggers, a grey tee, and this on your feet for the day that includes a treadmill, a supermarket and a commute. Smart casual: dark denim with a navy overshirt, since Midnight Navy is quiet enough to sit under work clothes without looking like gym kit. Take your usual running size and check the toe box with the socks you wear most, because entry level lasts tend to be roomier than performance ones. It handles road, treadmill and standing shifts, not trail. Replace it when the cushioning feels dead underfoot rather than waiting for the upper to tear.
Nike's most famous line was not aimed at champions. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988, launched on 1 July that year with an 80 year old runner named Walt Stack, and Advertising Age later called it one of the top five slogans of the twentieth century, with the campaign now held in the Smithsonian. That idea, that the brand belongs to whoever laces up, is what a shoe at this end of the range delivers on. India saw the same logic when Nike entered in 1995 through a licensing agreement with Sierra Industrial Enterprises, though its pricing ran roughly 30 percent above competitors and the business struggled for years.
An entry level trainer earns its place through simplicity: a breathable mesh style upper, a cushioned foam midsole tuned for comfort rather than propulsion, and a rubber outsole patterned for pavement. Nike's cushioning family runs from the pressurised Air unit sealed into the midsole, visible in product since the 1987 Air Max, down to lightweight foams like Lunarlite for everyday shoes, and the everyday end is where a shoe like this lives. Midnight Navy is a forgiving colour that hides road dust and light scuffs. Wash it by hand with mild soap and a brush, never in a machine, and air dry it away from radiators so the midsole foam does not harden.
