Designed by Peter Moore and released on 26 October 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Off Noir/Starfish/Dark Driftwood/Lemon Wash/Sail/Black. Nike's voice was built with Wieden+Kennedy, the agency it has worked with since 1976 and the source of Just Do It, and the lesson of that partnership is that the brand communicates best in short declarative phrases. Somos Familia, we are family, works the same way. It is a Dunk High built around a phrase rather than a team, which shifts the whole design brief: the colours have to carry warmth and celebration instead of allegiance. The High is the right silhouette for it, since the taller collar gives more surface for detailing and the shape has more presence than the Low. This is a shoe about belonging to people rather than to a franchise, and it is dressed accordingly.
Two ways to style it. High tops want a defined leg line, so start with straight or slightly tapered denim cuffed just above the collar, plus a plain heavyweight tee, letting the ankle detailing show. Second, go warm: brown or rust trousers with a cream knit, which pulls the celebratory palette into everyday wardrobe territory. Good for evenings, gatherings, gigs, weekends and cooler weather, since a high collar is uncomfortable in peak heat. Fit is true to size, with the collar stiff for the first few wears before it packs down. Care follows the mixed materials: brush textile and suede areas dry, wipe leather panels with a mild cleaner, and never apply one product to the whole shoe.
Nike's cultural reach has always depended on communities adopting its shoes and making them mean something the brand did not plan. That is how basketball models became fixtures of urban and hip hop dress in the 1980s and how the Dunk became a canvas rather than a court shoe. Releases built around heritage and family sit in a delicate position: they only work if the design is good enough that people wear them for the shoe rather than for the message. This one earns it on the silhouette alone. The phrase gives it a reason to exist, and the Dunk High gives it a reason to be worn long after the moment that produced it.
A high top Dunk on a rubber cupsole, with the extended collar giving extra panel area for colour and detail work. Celebration makeups on the Dunk tend to layer treatments rather than rely on a single colour split, so expect richer material contrast across the panels than a standard release carries, with the ankle and heel doing more of the visual work than they do on a Low. The structural build stays the same as it has always been: stitched overlays, a padded collar, flat woven laces, a foam sockliner, and the waffle derived tread pattern that descends from Bill Bowerman's rubber experiments. High tops need a break in around the ankle, so give them a week before a long day on foot.
