Designed by Peter Moore and released on 5 June 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Wine/Black/White. Fragment Design's work with Nike is built on subtraction: take an archive silhouette, strip the colour to a couple of tones, and let the panelling do the work. The Beijing edition applies that discipline to the Dunk High as a city specific release, which gives the restraint a reason. The Dunk is the right shape for it because it has no technical features to argue with, just leather panels and a high collar. Nike's history of designing for particular places runs alongside its history of designing for sport, from its first store in Santa Monica in 1966 to the first Niketown in Portland in 1990, and city make ups are that instinct in product form.
Two ways to wear it. Grey wool trousers with a navy knit, where the shoe reads almost as a leather boot and the sports origin fades into the background. Or straightforward: raw denim, a white tee and a bomber, cuffed above the collar so the high top shape is visible. Do not bury the collar under a long hem. Size true to your normal Dunk. Clean smooth leather with a damp cloth and condition it occasionally, since a two tone shoe shows dryness at the crease more than a busy colourway does. Keep the white midsole out of sun to slow yellowing.
The Dunk moved from basketball into skateboarding through Nike SB and then into fashion, following the path Air Force 1s and Air Max models took when they became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s and returned in 1990s and 2000s casual looks. Design studio collaborations gave the model a second audience among people who buy for detail rather than for logo. Restraint reads as confidence on a shoe this widely copied, and a city release adds the one thing a common silhouette cannot manufacture: a specific place attached to it.
Leather panelled upper on the Dunk High last, padded high collar, contrast overlays at Swoosh, eyestay and heel, a foam midsole and the rubber outsole with the circular pivot pattern. No visible Air unit, so the ride is flat and firm and the shoe stays light for its size. City editions carry their identity through material choice and small detail work, tongue labels, heel marks, lining and insole graphics, rather than through changes to the last, so this fits like any Dunk High. A restrained palette makes leather quality obvious, since there is no colour blocking to distract from grain or finish. Give the collar a week to soften.
