Designed by Peter Moore and released on 14 November 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a nubuck upper in Anthracite/Pure Platinum/Cool Grey. Anthracite is a near black grey, and it is the least decorative thing you can put on a Dunk Low. That matters, because the Dunk's entire modern identity is built on colour: one silhouette repeated in hundreds of two tone combinations until the colourway became the product. A tonal dark grey pair steps out of that conversation and asks to be treated as a shoe. The silhouette comes from Nike's court period, the years when the Michael Jordan signing and the advertising around it made the brand synonymous with basketball, and the company itself had only existed under the Nike name since 1972, after the Blue Ribbon Sports importing years ended.
Two ways. First, all business: charcoal wide trousers, a black knit and a grey overcoat, where the shoe finishes the outfit without ever drawing attention. Second, loosen it: dark indigo denim, a white tee and an olive jacket, letting the anthracite anchor a warmer palette. This is the Dunk that works in a workplace with a relaxed dress code, which is not something you can say about most colourways. Size true; the midfoot is snug and eases within a week. Dark greys collect dust, so brush them dry regularly rather than washing them, and clean the white midsole separately so grey pigment does not transfer onto it.
The Dunk was carried into culture by the same current as the rest of Nike's line. From the 1980s onward the brand's shoes became status markers in urban and hip hop fashion, then staples of mainstream American youth dress, then core pieces in the casual and athleisure looks that followed. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, gave the company a voice that reached far past sport and was later named a top five slogan of the twentieth century by Advertising Age. A blacked out Dunk is that history worn without any announcement attached to it.
The Dunk Low is an honest build with nothing hidden: overlay panels stitched across a base, a padded low collar, flat lacing and a cupsole underneath. In a tonal anthracite execution the panel seams become the only visible structure, so the quality of the stitching and the crispness of the panel edges are what you actually judge the shoe on. Nike's outsole engineering descends from Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron in search of traction without weight, and a court sole still balances grip against flex on that principle. Style code FV0384 001 confirms this Anthracite execution. Dark uppers hide scuffs but show dust and salt, which is the opposite trade to a white pair.
