Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 10 September 2020 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has the Multi-Color/Midnight Turquoise/Cardinal Red/Lemon Wash colourway. Community Garden is a Dunk with a subject rather than a colourway, built around planting, growing and the shared plots that hold neighbourhoods together, and it treats the panels as space for that idea instead of for a team. Green, earth tones and hand drawn detailing replace the flat two colour split the model was designed around, which makes it one of the more sincere things Nike has put on this silhouette. The company has never been shy about attaching itself to a cause and taking the consequences, and a garden themed court shoe is the gentlest possible version of an instinct that has produced far more contested campaigns.
Earth toned and detailed uppers want plain natural fabrics around them. Try olive fatigues with a cream sweatshirt, or brown corduroy trousers with a white tee and a denim jacket, so the shoe stays the most interesting thing at floor level. Keep other patterns out of the outfit entirely. This is a daytime, dry weather shoe, and any embroidered or printed detailing is another reason to avoid rain. Most feet want half a size down, because the Dunk last runs long. Store with the original insoles in place, since themed insoles are a real part of what makes a release like this worth keeping.
Nike has been willing to spend brand equity on social positions, most visibly from September 2018 when it built a long term campaign around Colin Kaepernick, who had knelt during the US national anthem. The response ran both ways, with product burnings and condemnation from a police union alongside public support from LeBron James and Serena Williams. That episode reset expectations of what a sportswear company will say out loud. A community themed release sits at the quiet end of the same posture, where the message is local and the risk is nil.
A Dunk Low with a themed multi material upper, so panels vary in texture and finish across the shoe, over the standard padded collar and tongue, foam sockliner and rubber cupsole. Themed releases habitually carry their story into the parts you do not see, the insole graphic, the lining, the lace options, so check what came in the box before you throw anything away. Cleaning follows the panel: brush any napped section dry, wipe smooth leather with a barely damp cloth, and leave printed or embroidered detailing alone unless it genuinely needs work. Underfoot it is the plain Dunk answer, flat and firm and close to the ground.
