    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 3 September 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Dark Beetroot/Cashmere. The name on this shoe was coined by an employee, Jeff Johnson, when Blue Ribbon Sports ended its Onitsuka Tiger distribution deal in 1972 and had to become a brand instead of a middleman. That handover from importer to house is why Nike treats its archive as raw material: nothing in it is sacred. The Dunk Low is the clearest case. Dark Beetroot and Bordeaux is a wine coloured makeup: two closely related deep reds, one skewing purple and earthy, the other skewing toward the classic wine tone, laid over a pale base. Running two shades that near each other on one shoe is a deliberate difficulty, because the panel splits have to carry the distinction. On this silhouette they do, since the Dunk was drawn to separate colour cleanly from the start.
Wine tones belong with neutrals and other deep colours. Wear it with charcoal wool trousers, a cream knit and a black overcoat, letting the shoe be the one warm note in a cold outfit. The alternative is denim led: dark indigo straight jeans, a burgundy or oatmeal sweatshirt and a tan jacket, which repeats the red once and stops. Avoid bright colours, which cheapen deep reds instantly. Dunk sizing runs true with a narrow toe box, so wide feet should go half up. Wear dark socks for the first few outings in case of dye transfer, protect the pale panels before wear one, and keep the pair away from sun to prevent uneven fading.
Nike's basketball shoes became status markers in hip hop and urban fashion from the 1980s, then everyday American youth dress, then part of the casual and athleisure revival of the 1990s and 2000s, and the Dunk rode all three waves without being the star of any of them. That anonymity is its advantage: nobody has fixed ideas about what a Dunk means, so a wine coloured pair can read as autumn styling rather than sneaker culture. Deep reds have a long association with tailoring and with luxury leather goods, and putting them on a court shape is the sort of borrowing this silhouette absorbs without visible effort.
The panel logic is the entire mechanism here. The Dunk is stitched from discrete leather sections into a flat, wide, low profile shoe, with a padded collar and a Swoosh running the length of the quarter, so a two tone red execution has natural borders to sit inside. Without those seams the shades would blur into one another. Nike's engineering heritage sits underneath, inherited from Bowerman's waffle iron experiment that made the outsole the first solved problem rather than the last. Deep reds are among the least forgiving dyes: they transfer onto light socks when new, and they lift if you attack them with solvent. Use mild soap, cold water and a soft brush, and never soak the upper.
