Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 10 March 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/White. Next Nature is Nike's content line, and putting it on the Dunk in black and white is the least decorative decision available: the most reproduced colour pairing in footwear on the most reproduced silhouette in the company's lifestyle range, made from material that used to be something else. There is no story panel and no collaboration to explain it. The argument is entirely in the construction, and the colourway is chosen so nothing distracts from the fact that this is a normal shoe you can buy in normal quantities. Mass produced is the point rather than the compromise here.
Black and white goes with everything, which makes this the Dunk to wear when you do not want to think about it. Straight leg blue denim with a white tee, or black wide leg trousers with a grey crew neck, and it works either way. It is also the best pick in the range for unpredictable weather, since synthetic panels handle a damp commute better than full grain leather does. Half a size down is the usual call, given how long this last runs. Clean the white panels with a soft brush and a mild cleaner, and keep the midsole sidewall clean, since that is where any Dunk shows its age first.
Nike Grind has been recycling manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into product and surfaces for years, and Next Nature is the version aimed at the shelf rather than at a sustainability report. It arrives from a company in transition: Phil Knight stepped down as chairman in 2016, John Donahoe became chief executive in January 2020, and Nike veteran Elliott Hill later succeeded him. A everyday Dunk in the plainest possible colours is what a large company does when it wants a change in materials to reach ordinary customers rather than collectors.
A Dunk Low built with content across the upper, midsole and outsole, over the same padded collar, foam sockliner and cupsole layout as any other Dunk. synthetics behave slightly differently to full grain leather: they crease more softly, they resist water marking better, and they respond well to a damp cloth and badly to solvent. Black and white is the most forgiving pairing to own, since the black panels hide scuffing and the white ones are easy to clean specifically. Underfoot the ride is the standard flat, firm, close to the ground Dunk experience, with the vamp creasing early and then holding steady.
