Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 February 2007 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Varsity Crimson/Black colourway. Early Nike SB Dunks were released with codes, not names, and the community named them anyway. Milli Vanilli is one of those nicknames, borrowed from a pop act rather than granted by Nike, and it stuck because collectors needed a way to talk about a specific colour blocking faster than reciting digits. The Dunk itself had already lived two lives by then, first as a basketball shoe, then as a discontinued model, before skateboarding rescued it and turned it into the most collected silhouette in the catalogue. Style code 304292 602 is the identifier that actually matters, and Pro SB in the title marks it as the skate build rather than a general release retro.
Early SB colour blocking deserves plain clothing. First: loose straight leg jeans with a slight stack, a plain white tee and white crew socks pulled up, the skate uniform the shoe was built for. Second: grey sweat shorts and a heather crew in warm weather, where the padded tongue and collar are the visual detail rather than the outfit. Dunks fit narrow, so size up half for a wide forefoot. On an older pair, wear is a real consideration: check the midsole for crumbling before you commit to a session, brush suede dry rather than wetting it, and store in a cool dark place, because heat and sun are what age glue and foam fastest.
Nike SB is where the company's habit of borrowing from culture caught up with it. In 2005 the division used Minor Threat's 1981 album art on a tour flyer, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and apologised on 27 June 2005 before settling out of court. Nike had form: it used the Beatles' Revolution in a 1987 ad after paying Capitol Records 250,000 dollars without Apple Records' approval, was sued and pulled the campaign in March 1988. Skateboarding held the brand to account in a way sport never did, and that friction is exactly why early SB Dunks carry the cultural weight they do.
Pro SB means the Dunk was rebuilt for landings. That translates to a fat, heavily padded tongue, extra collar padding and impact cushioning underfoot, because a shoe that absorbs board impact needs protection a basketball retro does not carry. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, is the company's foundational cushioning technology and the ancestor of everything soft in the range. The upper is panelled leather and suede, which is exactly why the model became a colour blocking canvas: each panel takes its own tone and material. Suede is the vulnerable part on any early SB, and on a shoe of this age the foam and the glue lines deserve inspection before wear.
