Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 February 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Baltic Blue/Electric Algae/Deep Royal/Laser Orange. Nike's relationship with rubber is the oldest technical thing about it. Bill Bowerman poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron because he wanted a lighter, grippier sole than anything on the market, and that kitchen experiment produced the waffle tread that carried the company through the 1970s. A gum outsole belongs to that same material tradition, warmer and softer looking than white rubber and better at hiding wear. This special edition Dunk Low pairs it with Baltic Blue, a cool marine shade, and the contrast is the whole idea: a cold blue upper sitting on a honey coloured base, each making the other more obvious.
Gum soles want warm, worn in clothing. Wear it with raw or dark indigo denim, a cream heavy knit and a brown leather jacket, so the honey sole ties to the outerwear and the blue reads as the accent. The second option is workwear leaning: tan carpenter trousers, a navy overshirt and a plain tee, where the blue upper links upward and the gum links down. Avoid black clothing, which makes gum look muddy. The fit is true to length with a close cut across the toes, so go half up if you need width. Protect the upper before wear one, wipe the gum sole gently, and keep the pair out of sun, which yellows gum unevenly.
The Dunk arrived in street culture second hand. Nike's status was built through basketball, via the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, and through hip hop and urban fashion from the 1980s onward, after which its court silhouettes became fixtures of everyday American youth dress and returned again through the casual and athleisure wardrobes of the 1990s and 2000s. Gum soles carry their own separate association, with skate shoes and workwear boots rather than with basketball, so a gum bottomed Dunk quietly borrows credibility from two different traditions at once and belongs fully to neither.
Gum rubber behaves differently from a standard white outsole. It grips well, it darkens slowly with use rather than showing every mark, and it gives the shoe a warmer visual temperature from the ground up. On a panelled Dunk that warmth is the counterweight to a cool blue upper. The SE designation usually means additional material or applied detail over the standard build, which stays what it always is: stitched leather sections, a low wide footprint, a padded collar, a full length Swoosh. Care splits by component: clean the upper with mild soap and a soft brush, and leave the gum sole alone beyond a wipe, since aggressive cleaning strips its finish and makes it look patchy.
