Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 August 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Midnight Navy/Coconut Milk. Vintage Midnight Navy is the Dunk Low treated like an old pair rather than a new one. The navy is deep and slightly dusty, the white is warmed off into a cream, and the whole shoe is finished to look like it has already lived a few years, which is a specific taste: people who want the Dunk's proportions without the showroom gloss. The silhouette itself came out of Nike's basketball programme and stayed in circulation because the shape is simply good, a low cut court shoe with a strong two colour split. Nike could keep reissuing shapes like this because by 1980 it already held roughly half the United States athletic shoe market and had the archive to draw from.
Navy and cream is the most forgiving pairing in the Dunk catalogue. Wear it with mid grey trousers, a navy crewneck and a white tee showing at the collar for a tonal look, or use it to soften workwear: brown carpenter pants, a cream hoodie and a navy overshirt. Occasion is everyday, travel and casual evenings. The Dunk Low fits close and runs flat, so expect a firm ride and consider a half size up over thick socks. Because the finish is deliberately aged, clean gently: dry brush first, then a barely damp cloth with mild soap on the navy, and leave the cream to age rather than trying to restore it.
The Dunk's cultural weight comes from Nike's ownership of American basketball and everything that followed it. Signing Michael Jordan in 1984 and running the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon campaigns made Nike the shoe of the sport, and through the sport a fixture of hip hop dress. From the 1980s onward Nike models became status symbols in urban fashion before settling into mainstream 1990s and 2000s casual wardrobes. The aged treatment on this pair speaks to a later instinct in that culture, a preference for shoes that look already owned rather than freshly bought, which is a way of signalling that you were there before the reissue.
The Dunk Low's structure is panelled: overlapping side sections, a low collar and a Swoosh laid across the seams so the colour break is visible from a distance. Here the navy takes the overlays and Swoosh and the aged cream forms the base, so the two tones read softer against each other than a crisp white would. Underneath is the flat, wide court outsole, which gives you a firm and very grounded ride rather than plush cushioning. The vintage finish means small marks blend in instead of standing out, which makes this an easier pair to actually wear. Do not attempt to whiten the cream sections, since that fights the shoe's entire finish.
