Designed by Peter Moore and released on 13 December 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/White/Black. Panda is the nickname the internet gave black and white Dunk colour blocking, and it stuck because it describes exactly what the shoe does: two panels, maximum contrast, no decoration. The Mid is the least discussed of the three Dunk heights and the most practical, sitting between the court reference of the High and the everyday ease of the Low. The model itself began as college basketball equipment, built on the flat, grippy logic Nike had been refining since Bill Bowerman's waffle outsole experiments produced the 1974 Waffle Trainer. In black and white it becomes the default: a shoe you buy because it goes with everything, which is a harder brief for a designer than any loud colourway.
First recipe: straight leg black denim with a small break, a white or grey crew and a black overshirt, using the shoe's contrast as the structure of the whole outfit. Second: light grey sweatpants, a black hoodie and white socks pulled just above the collar, which suits the Mid height because the extra material above the ankle needs a shorter hem to read properly. Good for everyday wear, offices with a relaxed code and travel. Dunk patterns run a little narrow across the toe, so try true to size and go half up with thick socks. Wipe white leather after each wear with a damp cloth, use a mild cleaner on scuffs, and keep shoe trees or paper in them so the toe crease stays shallow.
The Dunk moved from campus courts to skateboarding to the general release calendar, and black and white is the version that survives every cycle because it never dates. That path runs alongside Nike's larger shift: from the 1980s onward Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became staples of urban and hip hop dress before feeding the 1990s and 2000s athleisure vocabulary that still governs casual clothing. Panda colour blocking is the point where a hyped silhouette becomes a wardrobe basic, worn by people who never followed a release calendar. That ubiquity is itself the cultural fact: a shoe becomes infrastructure once nobody has to explain it.
Leather is what makes this colourway work, because black on white only reads sharp when the panel edges stay crisp. The Mid uses a padded collar that sits above the ankle bone, giving more support than a Low without the break in period of a High, and a flat court outsole with a forefoot pivot circle that traces back to the model's basketball brief. Cushioning is a foam sockliner over a foam midsole rather than a visible Air unit, since the Dunk predates the 1987 Air Max that made pressurised Nike Air a design feature. The Swoosh reinforces the sidewall it crosses. White leather creases visibly and shows scuffs immediately, so the maintenance load on this colourway is real.
