Designed by Eric Avar and released on 6 September 2024 as part of the Kobe 8 System line. This release has a mesh upper in Wolf Grey/White/Wolf Grey. Signature basketball is Nike's most profitable idea and its most demanding one, because it requires a player whose game is distinctive enough to justify a shoe. The brand has carried that model across generations of endorsers, with LeBron James and Kevin Durant among its signature athletes, and the Kobe line sits in the same tradition of shoes designed around one style of movement. The Kobe 8 Protro in Wolf Grey takes that lineage and strips the colour argument out of it. Wolf Grey is Nike's workhorse neutral, the tone the brand reaches for when it wants a shoe to look like equipment rather than merchandise, and on a low top guard shoe it reads sharp and unfussy.
Two ways. One, gym to street: black shorts or joggers, a grey tee, a zip through, so the shoe matches the kit rather than interrupting it. Two, minimal streetwear: charcoal wide trousers, a black bomber, white socks pulled slightly up, letting Wolf Grey act as the neutral that ties both. Use these indoors if you play; outdoor courts will chew a low profile outsole within a season. Care is simple: brush court dust off after every use, wipe the midsole edge, never leave them damp in a kit bag, and keep the laces tight enough that the upper is not creasing sideways.
Nike's basketball authority is institutional as well as cultural: it has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, the WNBA and the NBA G League since 2017, under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. That means the visual language of professional basketball is Nike's to set. Below that, the older current still runs, the one where Nike models became staples of urban and hip hop dress in the 1980s and never left. A grey low top sits at the intersection: quiet enough to be gear, recognisable enough to be worn nowhere near a court.
Low top basketball is a trade: you give up collar height and gain freedom at the ankle, so the shoe has to hold the midfoot properly to be safe. That is the logic Nike has pursued with Flywire, cables that lock the foot down while the upper carries less material, and it is the family of engineering a shoe like this belongs to. Protro means the original silhouette rebuilt rather than reissued untouched. Expect a close, sock like fit through the midfoot, a firm court feel and a shoe that rewards lacing all the way up. A grey upper hides court dust better than white and shows scuffing less than black.
