    Culture Note™

Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 30 May 2019 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has the Black/University Blue/Sail/White colourway. The first Blue Ribbon Sports retail store opened in Santa Monica in 1966, selling other people's running shoes to people who wanted to run faster. Everything Nike has become since is a story of a company gradually earning the right to redesign things instead of resell them, and the sacai Blazer Mid is the moment that right gets handed to somebody else. Black Blue is the version with a pulse. Where the tonal executions of this shoe hide the doubling, a blue running through the layers separates them visually and makes the split legible from a distance: two shoes, two Swooshes, two tongues, and now two clearly different colours doing the argument out loud.
The blue needs one echo and no more. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers, a white tee, a navy or washed blue overshirt picking up the layer on the shoe, everything else neutral. Recipe two: dark indigo denim cuffed once, a black knit, black socks, so the blue panels read as an extension of the denim rather than a separate colour. Casual, daytime, and confident enough to carry an evening. Size to your usual Nike and lace loosely through the upper eyelets to give both tongues somewhere to sit. Brush the panels dry, keep the pair out of rain given the layered stitching, and store away from sunlight to protect the blue.
Nike is at its most exposed when it borrows, and its history shows why. The unauthorised 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution, after paying Capitol Records 250,000 dollars without Apple Records' approval, ended in a 15 million dollar lawsuit and the ads being pulled in March 1988. Nike SB's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and a public apology. Handing a silhouette to an outside designer to take apart is the opposite manoeuvre: authorship is given, not taken. That distinction is why this deconstruction reads as a collaboration rather than as an appropriation, and it is the reason the shoe has aged well.
A mid cut court shoe rebuilt as two overlaid, with doubled tongues, doubled collars and stacked Swoosh panels across the quarter in black and blue. The blue is what makes the construction readable, because the eye can follow which layer sits on top of which. That extra material has real consequences: the shoe stands taller on the foot, holds its structure at the ankle rather than collapsing, and takes longer to break in than a standard Blazer because there is more upper to soften. The doubled laces and extended tongues are structural and should not be trimmed or flattened. The blue panels will fade before the black does if you leave the pair in strong sunlight.
