Nike SB Dunk Low Green Apple
Nike SB Dunk Low Green Apple
Culture Note™️
Origin
Nike SB took the Dunk because skaters had already taken it. The shoe's flat sole, wide platform and two layer leather build suited a board better than most purpose made skate shoes of the time, and the SB programme simply added padding and cushioning where skating punished the foot. Green Apple is a colourway that belongs entirely to that world: a bright, unserious green with no team behind it, the kind of colour a basketball shoe would never have been given in its original life. Style code DM0807 300 places it in the SB Dunk Low run, which is where Nike's least corporate design decisions have tended to happen.
Utility
Green this bright is a single accent, so keep everything else flat: black or washed indigo denim with a full stack, a white tee, a grey hoodie. The second recipe leans into it with cream trousers and an olive jacket, letting the green sit inside a warm palette rather than fighting it. Skate in them and the Swoosh panel goes first, which is expected. Dunks run long, so consider a half size down if your foot is narrow, though the SB tongue takes up some volume. Clean leather with foam cleaner and a soft brush, avoid soaking, and keep bright greens out of long sun exposure since they fade unevenly.
Influence
Nike SB's relationship with skating has never been simple. In 2005 the sub brand appropriated Minor Threat's album art for a tour flyer, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, apologised that June and settled out of court, a reminder that a company holding around half the US athletic shoe market since 1980 cannot simply buy its way into a subculture. What it could do was make good product, and SB Dunks became the most collected shoes in the catalogue. Bright, odd colourways like this one are the reason: they were designed for a scene that valued not looking like everyone else.
Construction
The SB version of the Dunk changes the shoe in three specific ways: a thicker, padded tongue that takes the pressure of tight lacing and board impact, a Zoom cushioning unit under the heel, and a more forgiving upper. The leather panel map stays: base, overlays, stitched Swoosh, perforated toe box. Underneath is a rubber cupsole with herringbone tread that gives grip on a board and on wet pavement equally. Green apple across the overlays against a paler base means the panel structure carries the colour break. Bright greens on leather show creasing at the toe more clearly than dark tones, which is worth knowing before you commit.
