Origin
The Dunk began as a basketball shoe and was rescued by skateboarding, which took a discontinued college silhouette and rebuilt it into the most collected shoe Nike has ever made. Nike SB Dunks arrive with nicknames rather than official titles: the community names them by what the colour blocking resembles, and the name outlives the marketing. Ms. Pacman is one of those nicknames, a bright arcade derived palette that people recognised faster than any product code. Style code 313170-461. This is not a licensed character shoe and it does not pretend to be. It is a colourway that reminded a generation of a machine they fed coins to, and the name stuck because it was funnier and more accurate than anything Nike printed.
Utility
A palette this bright wants everything else calm. First: black or washed indigo straight leg jeans with a slight cuff, a plain white tee, and the shoe as the only colour in the frame. Second: loose grey sweat shorts, a heather crew, white crew socks pulled high, a skate leaning fit that lets the padded collar show. Dunks run slightly narrow, so size up half if you have a wide forefoot. Suede on a bright pair is the vulnerable part: brush it dry only, never soak it, and use a suede eraser on marks. Keep them out of rain, and store in a box away from sunlight so the brights do not fade unevenly.
Influence
Nike SB is also where the brand learned the cost of borrowing without asking. In 2005 Nike SB appropriated Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer, drawing a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike on 27 June 2005 before an out of court settlement. The episode rhymes with the 1987 Beatles Revolution ad, licensed from the label but not from Apple Records, which was sued and pulled in March 1988. Skate culture holds Nike to a standard sport never did, and the Dunk's collector economy grew out of that scrutiny rather than in spite of it. Nickname colourways are that community writing the product history itself.
Construction
SB Dunks are Dunks with the skateboarding brief applied: a fatter, padded tongue, extra collar padding and a Zoom insole in the versions that carry one, because a shoe that gets landed on repeatedly needs impact protection a basketball retro does not. The upper is panelled leather and suede, which is exactly why the model became a canvas for colour blocking, since each panel can take its own tone. Nike Air is the house cushioning platform, a pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole. On a loud palette, the panel seams are the design. Suede scuffs and leather creases at different rates, so a multi material bright pair ages unevenly unless you actively look after the softest panels.
