Designed by Peter Moore and released on 8 February 2020 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Bright Melon/Gym Red/Med Soft Pink. The SB Dunk Low made with a skateboard company is the purest form of what Nike SB was set up to do. This is the StrangeLove Skateboards edition, style code CT2552 800, and it belongs to the category of SB releases where the collaborator is a working skate brand rather than a fashion label or a retailer, which is the distinction that skaters themselves have always cared about most. The colourway is soft and printed rather than sporty, closer to a greetings card than to court footwear, and that mismatch between a basketball pattern and a hand-drawn sensibility is exactly the kind of joke SB has always been willing to make.
Recipe one: loose faded denim with a plain heavyweight tee and a canvas jacket, letting the pastel print sit as the only soft element in an otherwise rough fit, which is how this shoe reads best. Recipe two: black wide trousers with a grey hoodie, where the colour lifts an entirely neutral outfit. SB builds fit snug, so size up if between, and lace loose with the tongue standing tall. Keep this pair dry, brush the suede with a dry crepe brush only, and never use water or cleaner on the printed areas. If you are storing rather than skating them, keep them out of sunlight, which fades pastel dye fastest.
SB collaborations with actual skate companies exist because Nike learned the cost of borrowing without asking. In 2005 the line appropriated Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer, Ian MacKaye publicly objected, and Nike apologised on 27 June 2005 and settled out of court. Building releases with skate brands, on their terms and through their shops, was the durable answer to that: the reference comes from inside the scene, and the people whose language is being used are the ones being paid. It is also why these pairs hold their meaning for skaters years later, in a way that a purely graphic release from a corporation never quite does.
A skate-built Dunk Low: suede and leather panels selected for abrasion resistance, a heavily padded tongue and collar to absorb board impact, reinforced stitching at the ollie and toe areas, and a rubber outsole carrying the waffle-derived tread that has been Nike's grip pattern since Bowerman poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron. Underfoot the cushioning is tuned for landings rather than running. Style code CT2552 800 identifies this make-up. Printed and pastel suede is the fragile part of a shoe like this: it takes scuffs deeply, cannot be wet cleaned, and any restoration attempt tends to lift the print, so it either stays pristine or it goes in the skate rotation.
