Released on 21 December 2020 and part of the VaporWaffle line. This release has the String/Black/Villain Red/Neptune Green colourway. This is the shoe that puts Nike's founding invention on display. Bowerman's obsession with lighter soles led him to pour rubber into his wife's waffle iron, producing the tread that became the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer, and the Vaporwaffle takes that vintage running pattern and rebuilds it with the collaborator named in the title. Villain Red Neptune Green is the loudest colourway in the family: a hot red laid against a cool sea green, two colours that should not sit together and are placed adjacent anyway. That deliberate friction is the entire proposition. It is a running silhouette from the 1970s re-cut so that nothing about it looks accidental.
Recipe one: wide cream or off-white trousers with a plain black long sleeve, so the red and green sit as the only event in the outfit and the layered panels stay readable. Recipe two: dark green or olive nylon trousers with a grey knit, pulling the Neptune Green out and letting the red act as the accent. This is not a running shoe now, so keep it to walking and city wear. The doubled tongue makes the collar feel snug, and most people find the fit slightly long, so try a half size down before committing. Clean the mesh with a soft brush and cold water, and keep the light midsole out of mud, because it yellows and scuffs faster than the upper does.
Nike's collaborations used to be corporate: it distributed Onitsuka Tiger from 1964 to 1972, bought Cole Haan, Bauer, Converse, Starter and Umbro, and kept only Converse. The design partnerships that define its current standing work the other way, handing the archive to an outside eye and letting it be dismantled. The Vaporwaffle is the cleanest example, because the thing being dismantled is the waffle sole, the object Nike's own founding myth is built on. Wearing this colourway is a statement about design rather than about sport. It says you care what happened to the pattern, not just that Nike invented it in a kitchen in Oregon.
The collaboration's method is doubling. Panels, tongues, Swooshes and eyestays are layered so the shoe reads as two pairs interleaved, and the midsole is stacked to match, which is why the profile looks taller and longer than the vintage runners it descends from. Underneath sits the waffle-derived outsole, the founding piece of Nike engineering, chosen here for its look as much as its grip. The upper mixes mesh with synthetic and suede-feel panels, and the colour split does the work of separating those layers so the eye can follow them. Style code DD3035 200 identifies this make-up. Villain Red and Neptune Green are placed to keep the doubled panels legible rather than to blend.
