Part of Nike's Air Max Muse line. This release has a synthetic upper in University Red/Metallic Silver/Black. Air Max is the line where Nike decided cushioning should be visible, starting in 1987 with a pressurised gas unit you could see through a window in the midsole. Everything since has been a variation on making the engineering the ornament. The Muse is the women's led interpretation of that idea, built around proportion and stance rather than around a running shoe's requirements, and University Red is the most confident way to buy it. Red is not a background colour. It fixes the shoe as the first thing anyone sees, which suits a model whose whole reason to exist is silhouette. Nike has been comfortable with that kind of statement since it put the Swoosh on shoes in June 1971 and made a graphic mark do the work of a logo.
Bright red works best as the single loud element. Recipe one: black straight leg trousers with a white tee and a black blazer, where the shoe turns a plain outfit into a decision. Recipe two: mid wash denim with a cream knit and gold jewellery, a softer build where the red reads as warmth rather than as impact. Avoid pairing with printed or patterned pieces, which will fight it. This is a city, evening and travel shoe rather than a training one. Take your usual Nike women's size and size up half if you have a wide forefoot. Clean the red with a mild foam cleaner and keep white trim up separately, since dulled midsoles age a bright shoe faster than the upper does.
Nike's women's roster is the part of its history that gets undersold. Serena Williams is an endorser, and Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix are among its sponsored track athletes. When Nike built its long term campaign around Colin Kaepernick in September 2018, Serena Williams was among the public voices supporting it alongside LeBron James, which tells you how the brand's athletes function as more than billboards. A red statement sneaker in a women's line sits inside that lineage: Nike has spent decades treating women's sport as a place to make an argument rather than a place to shrink a men's product and change the colour.
University Red is a clean, bright, slightly blue leaning red rather than a warm one, which means it sits well next to black, white and grey and awkwardly next to orange or burgundy. On the Muse's shape it fills large uninterrupted areas, so the shoe reads as mass and line rather than as panels. Nike Air runs underneath as the cushioning platform, the sealed gas unit the family is named for. A saturated red upper holds colour well and hides creasing better than a light shade, but the midsole and any white trim will be the first thing to date the pair. The women's last runs narrower through the forefoot than a unisex Air Max cut.
