Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 31 August 2022 as part of Nike's Cortez line. This release has a nylon upper in White/Varsity Red/Varsity Royal. The Cortez belongs to the era when Nike was still deciding what it was. Bill Bowerman spent those years chasing lighter shoes for his Oregon runners, an obsession that pushed him to pour rubber into his wife's waffle iron and produce the tread that became the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer, and the running silhouettes of that period are the last simple shoes the company made. This Zoom Cortez collaboration takes that flat, unfussy running shape and reworks it in white with university red and blue, which is the palette the original wore best. It is a heritage runner handed to a designer, and the result keeps the outline while arguing about everything inside it.
Fit one: straight leg jeans with a plain white tee and a red or navy jacket, the simplest way to wear a tricolour shoe without the outfit turning into a flag. Fit two: black tailored trousers with a grey knit, letting the low flat profile do what chunky sneakers cannot and sit cleanly under a hem. Cortez lasts run narrow and long, so consider your width before your length. The white base is the fragile part: protect before first wear, brush the seams, spot clean with a mild solution and keep coloured panels dry, since saturated red bleeds onto white when soaked.
Nike's first shop was in Santa Monica, opened in 1966, and the company's early growth ran through West Coast running culture before it ran through anything else. The Cortez took that Californian association and kept it, becoming a Los Angeles shoe in a way no marketing plan produced. That is the pattern with Nike's best models: the company designs for athletes, a city adopts the result and the meaning stops being negotiable. From the 1980s onward its shoes were fixtures of urban and hip hop fashion and then of mainstream American youth dress, and the flat old running silhouettes came back through that door, not through the running one.
The Cortez shape is defined by simplicity: a low flat profile, a slim toe, a long midsole wedge and a stripe of Swoosh running most of the length of the shoe. That flatness is why the model reads as a seventies object rather than a modern one, and why it never disappears under trousers the way a chunky trainer does. A designer rework typically doubles, splits or offsets those panels, so look at where seams have been added and where layers overlap. White with university red and blue is the original tricolour logic, which means the collaboration's alterations are legible immediately: you already know where each colour is supposed to sit.
