    Culture Note™

Released on 19 June 2024 and part of Nike's ZoomX Dragonfly line. This release has a mesh upper in Multi-Color/Multi-Color. Nike began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, a distributor for Japanese shoemaker Onitsuka Tiger, selling shoes out of a car at track meets because Bill Bowerman thought American runners were being short changed. Sixty years later the company's track spikes are where that argument still gets settled. The ZoomX Dragonfly 2 Elite Prototype is a distance spike carrying the prototype designation, which is the label Nike puts on product built to be raced by its athletes rather than merchandised to a season. Prototype is not a styling word here. It signals a shoe whose job is to be tested at the top of the sport, in the same discipline where Steve Prefontaine became the brand's first track endorser.
There is no styling recipe here, there is a usage protocol. Use one: 1500m to 10,000m track racing on a synthetic surface, warmed up in trainers, spikes on with minutes to spare, off immediately after the finish. Use two: a small number of sharpening sessions on the track before a target race so your feet learn the geometry, never a full training block. Fit should be race snug with almost no dead space. Do not run on road, concrete or gravel in these, which destroys both pins and plate. Dry them out of direct heat after a wet meet, check and replace pins regularly, and accept that the foam has a short competitive life.
Track is where Nike's credibility is banked. The lineage runs from Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon and the brand's original symbol of running as attitude, through sponsored athletes including Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. The company's foam technology also brought regulation with it: World Athletics set limits on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm, allowing one rigid plate and requiring general retail availability, and compliant models remain legal. A prototype spike lives right at that intersection, engineered for the athletes who define the rules and then have to run inside them.
A track spike built around ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive in Nike's range and the same material family that underpins the Vaporfly. In a distance spike, that foam is doing something specific: keeping weight near zero while returning enough energy to hold pace over repeated laps. The upper is minimal by necessity, the plate and pin configuration is for track surfaces only, and the entire shoe is engineered for a handful of races rather than a training block. Elite prototype construction means tighter tolerances and a fit that assumes a racing foot, not a comfortable one. It will feel aggressive, unforgiving and extremely direct on a synthetic surface.
