Culture Note™
The Roger line exists because of a shareholding, not a sponsorship. Roger Federer became a shareholder in On in November 2019, and in July 2020 The Roger launched as a limited edition lifestyle shoe. That was the moment a Swiss running specialist founded in 2010 by Olivier Bernhard, David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti stopped being read only as a runner's brand. The Advantage is the court shaped member of that family, and in black it drops the tennis white convention entirely. What you get is a clean low profile silhouette with On's structural sole logic underneath, blacked out so the shape carries the shoe. It is the least sporty way the brand has ever presented itself, which is precisely why it works away from a court.
A black court shoe is the most flexible thing in a sneaker rotation. Recipe one: charcoal wool trousers, a black merino polo and a grey overcoat, where the low profile keeps the outfit tailored rather than casual. Recipe two: raw indigo jeans, a white oxford and a navy blazer, letting the shoe act as the quiet full stop. Right for dinners, offices with a relaxed code, travel and evenings out, not for actual match play or road mileage. The low silhouette runs true to size with a close midfoot, so lace through every eyelet for hold. Wipe with a damp cloth, condition the upper occasionally, and use a shoe tree or paper to keep the toe from creasing flat.
Federer is a shareholder and collaborator on The Roger, not a founder of the company, and that distinction matters because it explains the product. He was not hired to wear a shoe, he had an interest in the shoe existing. Around it On built a tennis roster: Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca from March 2023, Flavio Cobolli from June 2024. The result is a brand that reaches mainstream sport through tennis while its cultural weight sits in design. A black Roger Advantage carries all of that without announcing any of it, which is how most people actually want a famous name on their feet.
This is a low, court derived build rather than a stacked running chassis, so the sensation is closer to the ground and the emphasis moves from bounce to stability. On's CloudTec approach still applies: the pods are foam engineered into geometry, compressing horizontally and vertically so support comes from shape rather than from a soft compound alone. A monochrome black finish means the seams, panel lines and pod edges do all the visual work, which is a harder standard to hit than a two tone shoe, and it rewards close inspection. On is Swiss designed and run out of Zurich with manufacturing in Indonesia and Vietnam, and this silhouette shows that clean, low ornament finishing more clearly than the running models.
